How Do Religions View Gambling?
Religious institutions are one of the most influential sectors in many countries. In public debates, their opinions are very important. Their influence on social issues is once again observed in the debate concerning the legalization of gambling in most nations. Even if gambling is legal in some countries, the views of religious institutions still matter because public campaigns were launched against the negative effects of gambling.
Even if most of these institutions oppose the legalization of gambling, gambling and religion share similar elements. Studies showed that most gamblers in traditional cultures believe that their winnings are caused by the divine powers and the Supreme Being or what Christians call as God.
When people engage in any gambling event, they have hopes that they may increase their finances or properties. In this regard, gambling games are said to offer hopes to people who are in great need. The same goes with religious institutions and churches. Churches and religious leaders provide hopes to people.
Islamic greatly oppose gambling and Islam followers condemned gamblers. They also see them as sinners. There are verses in the Koran that discourage people from engaging in any event that involves betting.
On the other hand, studies found that few animistic religions have moral and doctrinal grounds for opposing indigenous gambling. Chinese religions such as Taoism and Confucianism are tolerant about issues related to the legalization of gambling, because they support religious innovations.
The history of the Roman Catholic Church showed that Catholics and Christians condemn gamblers. They perceive gambling as sinful and irresponsible act even up to the Reformation of Catholic churches. After several decades, the Catholic Church developed a critical attitude and perception towards gambling. Nowadays, they oppose gambling if gamblers became addicted or if gambling games are played to excess. They also condemn gambling if the activity causes adverse effects such as financial troubles and family problems on gamblers.
There are different perceptions of religious institutions towards gambling and gamblers. Their views may differ from each other, but their motives are the same. Religious institutions only have one motive which is to improve the different aspects of the lives of their followers. It is important to know that religions aim to promote the lifestyle of their subordinates. Their support or opposition to legalization of gambling establishments may be influential, but what is significant is that this sector only hopes to provide the needs of people whether financial, mental, physical and spiritual.
